- Port Elizabeth Technical University, South Africa - The Secure Workflow Research Group looks at the development of secure workflow systems. Contains an overview of the research projects and numerous papers on secure resource allocation in workflow environments.
- Queensland University of Technology, Australia - The Workflow Laboratory at QUT (Brisbane, Australia), conducts research in the areas of workflow modelling languages, adaptive workflows, service-based workflows, and organisational aspects of business process management.
- Stevens Institute of Technology, USA - The group at the School of Technology Management (Hoboken, NJ, USA) conducts projects on workflow-based process controlling, the organizational impact of process automation technology, mobile workflow applications and a delphi study on the future of process automation.

Standardization Groups
- BPMI.org The Business Process Management Intiative develops the Business Process Modeling Language (BPML), which served as the foundation of the Web Services Choreography Interface (WSCI).
- OASIS- The organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards is focused on the Web Services field, BPEL4WS is being defined here.
- OMG - The Object Management Group has standardized a Workflow Management Facility that aims at the use of workflow technology in a CORBA environment.
- W3C - The World Wide Web Consortium has a working group concerned with Web Services Choreography, and is the forum for the WSCI and WSCL drafts.
- Workflow Management Coalition - Founded in 1993, the oldest standardization group focused on workflow management related issues.

- jBPM - The java Business Process Management aims at the development of an Open Source Workflow Engine based on Java. Contains an overview of the project, sources and binaries of the current release of jBPM and additional information. Maintained by Tom Baeyens.
- Vivtek Workflow Tookit Michael Roberts' wftk endeavour aims at the development of an open source toolkit for workflow applications.
- Open source workflow projects. Listed are version, language, status and license of more than a dozen open source workflow projects, and a short summary of each project's focus. Owner Michiel Schipper also maintains a Blog on workflow related topics.

- Carnot Inc. - Carnot Inc. produces the Carnot Process Engine, a true J2EE-compliant workflow management development platform.
- Fujitsu i-flow Fujitsu's i-flow system has support for Java and the Web, and offers dynamic process modification at runtime through the insertion of subprocesses on the fly.
- Optika - Optika's Acorde Enterprise Content Management Solution provides a workflow component with dedicated support for supply chain error management.
- Staffware Plc - Staffware is one of the oldest workflow vendors on the market and its Staffware Process Suite is a staple in the enterprise workflow market.
